TDS
Total dissolved solids (TDS) are found in drinking, surface, and brackish water, as well as wastewater. It refers to the total amount of solids present in a solution. These substances usually include salts, minerals, and other chemical compounds that are dissolved in a liquid. When a solid is dissolved in a liquid, its particles are evenly distributed throughout the liquid, creating a homogeneous solution.For example, when we dissolve NaCl in water, the sodium and potassium ions diffuse separately in the water, forming a salt solution.
High TDS negatively affects water or wastewater quality in several ways:
1- Water with high dissolved solids generally does not have a pleasant taste and may taste salty or bitter.
2- Among the negative impacts on the environment is that it can negatively affect aquatic ecosystems. This leads to a decrease in biodiversity and changes in the biological structure of aquatic animals.
3- Water with high mineral content is also unsuitable for many industrial applications. This type of water causes sedimentation in pipes and industrial equipment, which can reduce their efficiency and increase maintenance costs.
How to measure
We calculate TDS gravimetrically based on the difference in mass of the dried sediment in the evaporation dish from the moisture-free evaporation dish.
