Rust Removers
In general, rust removal is done in one of three ways: 1) chemical, 2) mechanical, and 3) electrochemical. At Azarasa Chemical Company, we use chemical methods for rust removal. Many rust removers are acid-based, and depending on the application conditions and the amount of rust present, we use weak to strong acids in rust removal production. These acids react with the rust layer on the metal surface, converting it into soluble compounds that can be washed away with water and remove the rust from the metal surface. However, they can also damage the base metal if not used properly.
Rusting occurs due to the presence of moisture, oxygen, and other chemical agents in the environment. When iron reacts with oxygen and water, it forms iron oxide (rust). This phenomenon not only damages the appearance of the metal, but can also damage its structure, reducing its strength and useful life.
Reasons to use rust removers
1- Improve appearance: Rust spoils the appearance of metal, and by removing it, rust restores the original and attractive appearance of the metal.
2- Increase durability: Rust can lead to further corrosion of the metal and weaken its structure. By removing it, rust prevents the progression of corrosion and increases the durability of the metal.
3- Refurbishment of parts: In many cases, we can refurbish rusted parts and avoid replacing them.
4- Preparation for Coating: Before applying protective coatings such as paint or plating, it is necessary for the metal surface to be completely clean and free of rust. Rust remover is essential to prepare the metal surface for these coatings.
5- Performance Improvement: In some applications, rust can impair the performance of the metal. For example, in mechanical parts, it can cause increased friction and reduce efficiency. Rust remover improves the performance of the parts by removing rust.
Performance
We usually clean the rust and oxide layer on the metal with acidic chemicals in an acidic environment and prepare the cleaned surface for the next process. In electroless or electroplating lines, rust removers perform pre-cleaning and ensure that the coatings are made without defects. While removing rust, we perform the degreasing process at the same time.
We can perform the pickling process at ambient temperature, and if the bath temperature is increased, more effective results will be achieved in a shorter time. We determine the pickling concentration and application time according to the amount of rust and deposits on the metal parts. On very rusty and greasy surfaces, the bath concentration should be higher or the process time should be extended.
